Apple MacBook Pro 17-Inch, mid-2010, BTO: Intel i7 2.66GHz / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD.

I bought this MacBook new in 2010 and used it for work through 2015. Then used as a family desktop for a few more years. It’s been in a box in my closet for the past couple of years, so I cleaned it up and have been using it some the past few days, including creating this post.

Details:

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010) - Technical Specifications:  https://support.apple.com/kb/SP581

Display: LED backlit. Glossy (as shipped - anti-glare coating was optional for this model). Appears to be flawless - I looked for scratches when cleaning and cannot see any. I did not recall any stuck pixels and check with https://lcdtech.info/en/tests/dead.pixel.htm .

Keyboard & trackpad: Keycaps show some minor wear (matte finish worn smooth), but all work, as does backlight. The key mechanisms have longer travel than my 2016 MacBook Pro or OG magic keyboard, fwiw. Trackpad shows almost no wear.

Ports: USB port was used for OS install from flash drive. I had used the other ports in the past, but did not test for this sale. Used WiFi for setup and testing.

Camera, mic, and speakers all work.

Superdrive: Played a DVD movie. Burned Applications folder to a DVD.

Battery: Monitor says “Service Battery” (see photos). I played a DVD for an hour on battery and charge dropped from 100% to 60%. The battery is far from full capacity, but still works well enough for a typical trip between home and work or coffeeshop.

AC Adapter: Comes with the original 85W MagSafe adapter (including AC cord and plug attachments). The DC cable is integral to the adapter, and the outer insulation deteriorated in a couple of places near the MagSafe end. See photos. I used the machine fairly heavily for work and made the original repair before 2016, so maybe too much heat. Or maybe a poor material choice by Apple for the 85W adapter. Adapter works fine and cable doesn’t seem to get warm charging from 60%. I covered with heat shrink (ran out of white - sorry). Adapter should be fine for home use, though you might want to replace it you plan to go mobile frequently. Note the layer under the outside insulation is a wire braid - you can see in the “before” photos.

Unibody and cover: Top of the unibody (keyboard side) and display cover are close to flawless. Small dent in the left front corner (see photos). Minor scratches on bottom. Left rear foot is damaged. The black plastic strip covering the hinge has a minor ding. Overall a very clean machine.

Ships with Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 (last install image available from Apple) ready to set up. Note you will need to use software update via the App Store to get the latest patches. Does not require signing in to the App Store, but two rounds are required to get the latest security patches. The last update was in 2020, so expect some compatibility issues with Safari rendering websites that use the latest technology - e.g., some elements of Yelp pages would not render.

Includes a Tom Binh sleeve style case along with the Best Connectivity Slim ExpressCard/34 to eSATA adapter and cable that I used to use to backup this MacBook to an SATA external drive when I was using it for work.
