Description
This is a used 12.1" Lenovo ThinkPad X200 ultra-portable laptop, released in 2008. It includes a custom boot firmware called Libreboot (see Libreboot section), the official UltraBase docking station, the original matte 1280x800 TN panel and LCD inverter (replaced with an AFFS panel, see Specifications (X200) section) and the original Lenovo charging brick + cable.
Condition
This laptop is still in great physical and functional condition, with only some minor scratches and wear on the plastic shell and keyboard (see photos). The keyboard shows the most cosmetic wear, but otherwise every key still functions perfectly. The screen is also in excellent condition with no visible scratches. All screws on the bottom of the laptop and the display bezel are present (although the cosmetic plastic caps that cover the display bezel screws are not present, see photos).
The included 9-cell battery is currently at 12% of its original design capacity, which yields around 1-2 hours of battery life on a full charge. While it is technically possible to continue using this battery, it is highly recommended to replace it eventually with a brand new battery from a trusted vendor, which will provide much better battery life.
This laptop has Libreboot installed, a free (as in freedom) boot firmware that replaces the stock proprietary Lenovo BIOS. It uses the GRUB / SeaBIOS bootloaders to boot into virtually any operating system (e.g. Linux, BSD, Windows etc.)
NOTE: Booting from a USB stick on GRUB or SeaBIOS is pretty unreliable, since it doesn't always get detected as a bootable medium. Instead, booting from the SD card slot is recommended.
Libreboot also completely disables the Intel Management Engine (IME), a microprocessor that exists on virtually every Intel CPU since 2008. Due to the nature of IME, there are several security and privacy concerns with it, making it a potential hardware-level backdoor into the computer. For more information, see the following resources:
