Drive tested by zeroing contents using FireWire target disk mode - same method I used to retrieve my data off the internal drive. Two subsequent macOS installations using external USB DVD drive.

Condition: intermittent graphics issues of lines across screen (see pictures), computer hung when copying data to external USB drive (why I switched to using target disk mode) - could have been all the 3rd party software originally on the computer, internal SuperDrive (DVD/CD drive) apparently failed since it simply ejects media about 20 seconds after being inserted, battery reporting 14 cycles and capacity of 5,534 mAh, 3 rubber feet missing from bottom of computer
