Purchased this 2017 MacBook Pro (non-touch ID) in current state as a tinker project (via eBay) but ultimately decided to buy a new laptop. I still believe this can provide a great opportunity for someone who has time and interest to fix, or at least offer a cheap way to extract potentially valuable OEM apple parts for a mac-based project of their own.
Please note that this product was purchased on this site and arrived with a few unknown issues when received (original seller was a great resource and I hope to do the same for the next). To ensure this does not happen to the next interested buyer, I've done my absolute best to document all known potential problems/replacement tasks that I've come across during my time with this device.
PLEASE make sure to look at all pictures and send any questions that come to mind before bidding. This laptop will be sold as-is! I will also include a bonus unopened plastic laptop case as a gift to inspire your hard work in 2023 (I pass the torch to thee!).
Quick notes:
- Device boots/machine powers on without issue
- Device is NOT iCloud locked(!) but requires a factory reset; this may require original screen and not external (see software section below)
- Screen does not display image but back light works
- Possible battery replacement (working and holds charge at time of sale)
- Track pad is not active but I think this could be an easy fix (currently using bluetooth + second screen without any issue)
- a few missing screws that can be replaced on back/internal hinges of device
Hardware:
- Includes all OEM parts (motherboard/SSD/logic/etc.) required to operate device
- Screen replacement required—back light works; crack in top left corner, cosmetic damage bottom right); can connect to external without issue
- Fan is loud (could just need a clean or replacement?)
- Track pad does not work at time of sale but is likely a simple fix (could be a bad ribbon cable but looks great at time of sale)
- Battery claims low cycle (3 as of report on 12/26/22), but was told from previous owner that this will likely need replacing...did not receive any notification from OS indicating a need to change but sharing as FYI
- Missing an assortment of screws for the following: back plate, two internal hinge, one for WiFi band (no impact to reception); received a small bag assortment of screws at time of purchase that I will simply pass on in case you know where they go!
Software:
- OS is currently High Sierra (eligible for upgrade to latest MAC OS Ventura)
Originally shipped without device account password (never iCloud locked, which is great). I was able to create an admin profile (thank goodness) using the following process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d424MjaTwy8.
Process above allowed me to gain entry to the device for images attached, but I strongly suggest performing a factory reset; I attempted to do this using an external monitor but was unable to complete (seems like you need the original laptop screen for this?). There's a very good chance you are more mac savvy than I am and can figure out how with external, so kudos to you (I am, however, proud that could at least get it accessible and operational for you!)

- Includes a free unopened plastic shell case (black)!
